Commanding the ship in detail

Star Fleet Battles was originally released by Task Force Games in 1979 as a pocket game in a resealable bag. Designed by Stephen V. Cole, it developed into an extensive system of tactical combat in the Star Fleet Universe. Its central mechanisms include allocating energy, maneuvering through impulses, managing shields, and recording damage to ship systems.

Energy gives the choices their bite

Speed, weapons, and other demands compete for a limited supply of energy. Position and timing matter because ships maneuver throughout the turn. A captain has to judge how to spend available power while anticipating what the opposing vessel will attempt.

The appeal is considerable control over the ship. That depth requires attention and patience. The original pocket edition should be assessed on its own terms; describing it through the enormous rule system that followed would give a misleading impression of its original size.

Battleward verdict

Star Fleet Battles deserves a place in any retrospective of Task Force Games. Its detailed approach makes it a strong candidate for players who enjoy studying a system and refining tactics. For a quick introductory fleet action, the original Starfire offers a different balance of detail and scope.
