Know which Impetus you own

Advanced Impetus is an appendix to the original Impetus rules. It collects amendments and clarifications alongside tournament arrangements and additional rules. The publisher's September 2015 document is version 1.7. Its identity matters more than the word 'advanced': buying or downloading a supplement does not provide the underlying game.

The current publisher site describes Impetus Second Edition separately, with Warbooks, its own errata, and the free A Good Day To Fight supplement. Do not automatically apply an older Advanced Impetus amendment to Second Edition. Confirm the documents your opponent or event is using before preparing an army.

More decisions before contact

The 2015 supplement includes terrain and tournament procedures, ambushes, advanced deployment, and flank marches. These create questions beyond the first frontal collision: where to conceal a force, whether to risk an arrival from the flank, and how much of the army to commit to a particular approach.

The attraction is a shared framework for handling those situations. Clear agreements about deployment and hidden troops can prevent an enjoyable battle from becoming an argument about what someone meant before the first move.

Useful detail comes with paperwork

A rules supplement can clarify a system while also making it harder to consult. Players may need the base book, army lists, and amendments open together. Our preference is to mark the relevant changes in a personal reference and agree on a dated rules package. Half-remembered amendments are a poor basis for settling a close game.

For players staying with first-edition Impetus, this is a practical addition with tactical interest. For a newcomer, it is a signpost into the older system, rather than a replacement for the current core rules. Choose the edition deliberately and keep its supporting material together.
