The Website

In the spirit of the holiday, I decided to channel my creativity into something digital while Christmas dinner was simmering. The result? This website - a simple, yet earnest manifestation of my increasing skills in HTML5 and CSS. It's straightforward, crafted in a few hours, and serves as a testament to what can be achieved with a bit of time and dedication.

Currently, it's the basic version, but don't let that fool you. I'm already in the midst of developing a more sophisticated platform. Imagine a site that fluidly adjusts to fit any screen it graces, packed with features that will make each visit a unique experience.

I'll be the first to admit, I'm not a connoisseur of web development. But through a series of trials, errors, and successes, I'm learning. Each line of code teaches me something new, and with this upcoming project, I aim to weave all those lessons into a website that's not just functional but spectacular.

Deciding on the color scheme was perhaps the most challenging part of this quick project. But it's all part of the journey. Stick around, and witness the transformation from simplicity to grandeur, from a quick project to a comprehensive digital experience.

On a further note, I'll continue to add to this current website with various things such as game reviews in the GAME section and news items in the NEWS section.

If anyone would like to see an item that hasn't been reviewed then please submit a request in the forum or would like to review a game and have it posted to the website (not the forum) then there are two things required; a short game review, about a paragraph long, and a website link where folks can go to get more information. Also, please check spelling and grammar. If you do all that, I'll be happy to add your review to the existing collection.

I want to thank the Nebula guys for all their feedback on the Battleward site. Without their suggestions this site would've been a lot duller. I want to hear from the rest of you, either by email, FaceBook, or through a post in this forum. I know some of you are coming into the site and visiting the forum because of the traffic the host is telling me I'm getting. Not a lot of traffic but more than I had previously. I'm not pushing this site yet, but I will soon enough, once I get all the additions and kinks out of the way. The email address is "admin at battleward dot com" I hope to hear from others soon. Thanks, guys.

I was simply overwhelmed by the number of suggestions that were submitted by several people from the Nebula Group and Napoleon's Battles group. I can't thank those people enough. Also, there were a few individuals who have giving me several good suggestions, too. Thank y'all as well.

Based on some of those suggestions, I've begun to implement a few of those already. I've added 3 new categories to the website, "Books", "Game Clubs", and "Conventions". I might add "Articles" later. I've half a mind to write some code so people can submit their own game reviews, book reviews, and etc. directly to the category it belongs in without my intervention. I've never done that sort of coding before, but I'm game. So maybe...

Well, that's all for now. I'll keep updating everyone through the forum as I see there are plenty of visitors coming to this forum and I assume the website. Until next time.

An interesting and totally unexpected thing happened.

I received inquiries from a couple of game publishers about advertising on battlward.com.

Until I was approached by these game publishers, I hadn't given it any consideration to monetizing the site. Now, I don't know. I guess I'll have to do some research on it, like how much they'll pay, will it force me to follow certain guidelines because of the advertisers, and overall, is it worth the few bucks I can bring in vs the possible headaches I'll get from such a thing? All things to consider and more. So, until I get more information on this, I can't make a decision. I know that advertising can be lucrative, but I do know that a major factor in monetizing depends on how many visitors come to a website.

Oh, well, time to get educated.

In continuation of what is next for the website, I'm expanding the Games section, basically, creating a single page that will list only the categories and in turn those categories will be linked to the games that are under that category.

For example: GAMES page> the Game page will display only the categories;
  • Board Games
  • Role Playing Games
  • Miniatures Games
  • Video Games

Then clicking on any category will take you to a page with only that category's list of that type of games.

I've begun working on it already but since I've a full plate including going to medical appointments it'll be a few days or a couple of weeks before it's functioning on the website.

If the listings get too large, then I have plans to alphabetize the games under each category. I don't expect I'll reach that for a while yet, but I have thought about it in case I needed to do something about it more immediately.

I added a few other extensions that were required by a couple of the extension. I also installed the Flags extension, so now a member can add a flag to their profile. And don't forget that members can use avatars in their profile which are seen on their posts. Also, if someone decides to do a post they'll see how the post box has changed with all the extra options and pretty buttons (yes, I have a life, but I also want to hurry up and finish the board).

Until Next time.

There was a little problem with the website today when the style file got messed up. Took me a few hours of trial and error to fix it. And it's still not right, but it's a lot better than before. As it goes, I was trying to validate the CSS code and it wasn't validating. I'm not a perfectionist, not really, but then again, I kind of am. Using the validator (which only displays what is wrong with the code), I created a new enhanced style sheet, and it would have worked except during the copy/paste somehow the code got whacked and I didn't catch that. So, yeah. It wasn't my best :geek: moment.

Live and Learn.

Just so you know...

Clicking on the "phpBB" logo (I will eventually install the battleward logo. Yes, we gave a logo.) will return you to the battleward.com home page. Clicking on any outside link, found either on the website or a post in the forum, will take you out of battleward.com including the forum. Keep in mind that clicking on a web link is solely on you, the link clicker. We offer the various web links found on the webpages and posts in the forum as a helpful option, so you don't have to go searching, however we have no control what other websites do or may do since posting the web links.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hello and Good Day,

I finally got around to repairing the https://battlward.com webpages, as they weren't displaying uniformly. When I first wrote the web code, I didn't maintain an equal sequential listing of the elements (this is very important), hence this caused the web pages to display incorrectly. It's all good now.

I added a new link on all the web pages to the Battleward Facebook page.

I'll be adding more content, especially in games and books. It's a lengthy and probably never-ending process (unless a stale website is what is preferred) so I'll probably be plugging away on here until the day I keel over dead. Hopefully I can turn all this over to someone else who can keep it going.

Y'all have a great day!
