Squad Leader, a Mismatch

Like those games where folks can go face-to-face with an opponent while pushing cardboard pieces around the map board? Here is the place for that. What board games have you played? What board games do you like and why? What board games do you hate and why? And so on...

Squad Leader, a Mismatch

Post by Gene »

Recently, I dove back into the world of Squad Leader, thanks to my neighbor. He's got a pretty unique situation, being service connected who's now playing the stay-at-home dad role while his wife works. This gives him some free time during the day, which he often fills with gaming. Although he's mostly a computer game enthusiast, we discovered a shared passion for Squad Leader during one of our chats.

He told me about procuring a used copy of Squad Leader while he was in the military and playing it a few times. Although it's been ages since he last played, and to be honest, it's been decades for me too. But we were both itching to get back into it. After a couple of attempts that didn't pan out, we finally managed to sync up for a game.

Let me tell you, it was a bit of a comedy of errors at first. We were constantly flipping through the rulebook, trying to clarify things as they came up. It felt like we were more focused on relearning the game than actually playing it. But by our second session, things started to click, and we got the hang of the basics.

Squad Leader isn't exactly an easy ride. The rules are complex and loaded with nuances and can eat up a lot of time. But that's part of the game's charm, right? Despite the initial hurdles, I'm anticipating our next match. We spent the bulk of our first two sessions shaking off the rust, so I'm saving the play-by-play for our next game when we're really in the groove.
