Steel Panthers: World at War

Post by Gene »

As some of you know, I’m a longtime player of the Strategic Simulations, Inc (SSI) PC game Steel Panthers, now known as Steel Panthers: World at War (SPWAW). Ever since its debut in 1995, I've been enthralled by the exciting tactical battles of World War II that game designers Gary Grigsby and Keith Bror have brought to life through my computer. This game is a pioneer in PC simulations, offering a variety of scenarios that can be tackled solo against the AI, or in intense head-to-head battles via email, hot seat, or online.

You can easily start with detailed campaigns set in North Africa or the Pacific, or craft your own using the game’s extensive customization options. Whether you prefer small skirmishes or expansive battles, you can adjust map sizes and terrains to suit your strategy. And if time is short, there’s always the option for a quick battle.

What really sets the game apart is its attention to detail with unit scale and variety. From squad-level infantry engagements to precise control over AFVs and aircraft, every unit behaves true to its historical counterpart. You'll notice it especially as the war progresses from early to late, with each period offering its own challenges and opportunities based on available units and technologies.

Playing as different nations reveals unique tactical nuances—like the high morale of Japanese infantry or the quick rallying ability of Russian soldiers. British troops exhibit steadfast morale, nearly on par with the Japanese, while German forces can be tough to rally once broken. American troops often shine with their all-around versatility on the battlefield.

Through countless hours of gameplay, Steel Panthers has provided not just fun but a profound appreciation for the complexities of World War II tactics. It’s truly the best bang for your buck in digital wargaming—and it’s all available for free at TapaTalk: SPWAW Depot, where you can also find mods and an enhanced version of the game.
