CAT6 Cabel Issue

Post by Gene »

Last year my hardwired internet connection began having issues, the connection became intermittent and finally stopped working altogether. I spent a few hours trying to figure it out. It was a futile attempt, as I found no software or hardware problem. Some people in Windows forums stated they had the same issues, and it turned out to be a Windows problem. If this was the case, then what could I do about it? Right?

I switched to wireless, but Wi-Fi has always been a bit problematic. The transfer rates, compared to a cable connection, are dismal and the connection is as likely to drop at inopportune times. My Wi-Fi download speeds are about 20-30 Mbps on a good day, and upload speeds are about 3-5 Mbps. Cable on the other hand, on the worst day, my downloads are about 460 Mbps and uploads are 45 Mbps. So, I'm not a fan of Wi-Fi, but that's what I had until yesterday. My transfer speed had been slowing until it reached atrociously slow rates and the connection drop offs had become frequent, to the point that staying connected had become a real issue.

Once more, I checked the software and the hardware, and I found nothing amiss. Wi-Fi is fickle largely based on what other radio interferences there are affecting the wireless connection. Unfortunately, I have no way easy method of detecting that sort of thing. It's just an assumption. However, I've been working with RF since I was a kid, so I'm fairly well versed in it. Not to mention I went to school at Ft. Gordon for communications as my last duty station.

Getting vexed at the Wi-Fi connection issue, and not being able to do much to correct it, I looked at the cable connection problem, again. After a meticulous examination that took several minutes, and using my daughter's eyes, we found two (2) broken wires inside the clear male connector. Well, two broken wires on a CAT6 cable will certainly cause connectivity issues!

After snipping the bad part off, including the male connector, I installed a new male connector and crossed my fingers. Yes! It worked! I never suspected the cable as being faulty the year before, when the connection first quit working, but there you have it. It seems like it's the least expected things that trip a person up. I hope this tale of woe helps you in your own discovery of conundrums.
