Why Battleward?

Post by Gene »

Since the Battleward.com website went public last December, I've been inundated with similar questions, both through emails and other social media platforms, all circling around one central inquiry: "Why did I choose the name 'battleward' for the website?"

While I've always tried to answer, the truth is, my responses weren't as thorough as they could have been. Caught up in a whirlwind of other things, the time to craft a complete explanative reply simply wasn't to be had. Please understand, it was never my intention to disregard these questions; it was only after noticing a significant collective curiosity that I realized it was time to address this directly.

Now, to answer the question at hand.

The domain name 'battleward' was registered two years ago, but it wasn't until more recently that I began to actively use it. In choosing a name, I sought something that encapsulated the essence of my project: a platform offering live game streams and other gaming-related content across the United States. Despite considering numerous naming options, none felt quite right until I remembered a line from a short story, which vividly stayed with me: "To battle we go. To fight for our lands and our rights as free men. To die if we must, to continue the promise made. To go forth towards victory! Battleward, ho!"

The term 'battleward' literally means move "toward battle," carrying a weight and significance that perfectly aligned with the vision I had for the website. Though this hybrid word might not have a clear etymological origin—likely born from poetic creativity—it deeply resonated with the spirit of what I wanted to achieve. I contemplated naming the site "Battleward, Ho!" but ultimately found it a tad too dramatic for my taste.

My goal for battward.com has since changed significantly but as the name was already secured and more importantly, paid for, I thought, why not use it?

And there you have it—the story behind the name.
