Until Further Notice

Post by Gene »

As some of you may have noticed, I haven’t been organizing any gaming meet-ups recently. This is due to a series of medical issues I am currently facing. To provide a brief overview, I am dealing with cervical spinal stenosis, torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders, two bad knees, and one problematic foot. Additionally, I am virtually blind in one eye and suffer from a vestibular disorder that affects my equilibrium, causing balance issues and dizziness. Some of these conditions are service-connected, meaning they have been officially recognized by the Veterans Administration as injuries sustained during active duty, while others are not, although I believe they should be.

Given my current condition, I am unable to travel to locations more than 45 minutes away, as my knees and neck make it difficult to sit in one place for extended periods. This also means my participation in gaming sessions will be limited or none at all unless I happen to have a good day that coincides with a scheduled game. The last game I attended at Chip’s was a particular challenge, as I was in constant pain and my attention kept leaving the game. Most pain medications either do not provide sufficient relief or are too strong, causing unwanted side effects. Therefore, I typically avoid them.

I am currently undergoing therapy for my knees, have recently completed therapy for my shoulders (which have shown some improvement), and will soon begin vestibular therapy for my ear. Unfortunately, this means I will also miss out on attending conventions, which I had been eagerly anticipating. Traveling by plane and participating in games that require long periods of standing or sitting is simply not feasible for me at this time.

I am sharing this update to explain my intentional isolation as I focus on my immediate health needs. It is much easier to manage when my attention is not spread thin across various activities. I will try to keep in touch as best I can. This also explains why I have consolidated my once wide ambitions, narrowing my focus to the development of 2 or 3 games.

Know you know. And when you know, you know! That's such a stupid quip!
